January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness and take action to protect people from exploitation. Human trafficking can involve forced labor or commercial sex, and it can happen in any community—not just in big cities or in dramatic “kidnapping” scenarios. Traffickers often rely on manipulation, threats, and control, making it hard and dangerous for victims to leave.
Prevention starts with understanding the risk factors traffickers exploit, such as housing instability, financial hardship, isolation, and lack of support. Learning the warning signs can also help: someone may seem fearful, unable to speak for themselves, controlled by another person, lacking identification, or working long hours in unsafe conditions.
This month, you can make a difference by:
- Sharing accurate information
- Supporting survivor-centered organizations
- Promoting safe, fair workplaces
- Talking with youth about online safety
If you believe someone may be in danger, don’t confront a suspected trafficker. Instead, reach out for help.
